For Macs running MacOS Mojave or earlier you’d use iTunes to set it up.
Apple retired the iTunes app in MacOS Catalina. And Macs running later MacOS’s use Finder. To backup and sync to a Mac.

In earlier MacOS releases you use iTunes.
Open the iTunes app. Connect your iPhone to your Mac. Click on your device. And just like under the Finder app. Scroll down to the device’s Option heading. And check mark the box ‘Show this iPhone when on Wi-Fi’. Click Apply.
So, you can connect your iPhone to your Mac and backup and wireless sync without a cable. It’s worth knowing that a WIFI device backup or sync is slower than over USB.
But when you want to free yourself from needing a USB cable for your Apple devices. That’s the tradeoff.

Turn on Bluetooth to share files with your Mac. And you won’t need a working WIFI or a USB cable.
You will need your Mac and iPhone close by each other. Within 33 feet. And you use the AirDrop option to send your info. Yeah, strange but you do.
You can Bluetooth over to your Mac photos, notes, contact info. Any file with a share option on your iPhone screen.
And if your iPhone’s phone plan has a data option. Then you can set up your iPhone as a personal hotspot. To share your phone’s cellular Internet. And if you’ve an iPad with the cellular option. And data on your plan. You can do the same.
